Maths Empowering Girls Day
By Mr Steve George
The Maths Empowering Girls Day, organised by MAWA and hosted by Curtin University, took place on Tuesday 30 November. Aimed at Year 9 girls, we took the Year 10 girls instead as the Year 9 cohort was on camp at Rottnest.
The event aims to encourage girls to study higher mathematics and to showcase the career options that become available when one can apply mathematics in a variety of contexts. Although girls at Carmel are not reluctant to undertake mathematics and science programs, it continues to be a problem in Australia generally and so I am fully supportive of the aims of this initiative.
The activities on the day were good. Unfortunately, the Analysis of Fatal and Serious Crash Scenes understandably didn鈥檛 happen as the detective due to run the session was called to a crime scene!
Overall, the girls reported that the excursion was worthwhile and one that we should think about going on annually. They also had some useful feedback about the day; I agree with many of their proposals and will be forwarding these thoughts on to MAWA.
