Some Days Really are Better Than Good
In all lines of work, there are some days that are better than others. For me, some days are听good听and others are even better than good.听
Last Friday was one of those 鈥榖etter than good鈥 days.听
It began with a preview of our School Musical in the Sylvia and Harry Hoffman Primary School Hall. Our High School students, who have been working tirelessly every Sunday since mid-last year, came to give our Primary students a taste of what is to come. And it was WOW! It鈥檚 not easy to master the singing, dancing, acting trifecta, but our leads have talent in spades! 鈥淚f you鈥檙e an Adam鈥 was funny, mesmorising, and pitch perfect. The听Primary students were in stitches watching our Head Boy in a bald cap floss his way through the song. And I sat and clapped, letting the听nachas听(pride and joy) wash over me and drop into the pores of my soul.听
As soon as the performance ended, students in Years 2-6 stayed in the hall for davening (prayers). Morah Benn shortened davening on that Friday so the students could practise the songs and readings from the听Hagaddah, making sure they are tip top ready for the Seder in a few weeks. There is no joy that matches seeing and hearing hundreds of children singing together in a chorus that spans not just the room, but generations. Our students know our tunes and songs; they know the order of the Seder and how to conduct themselves and even lead their family Seders.听听
And the cherry on the cake was the excitement and enthusiasm with which they are anticipating Pesach. Even though they are young, our students know that these experiences of sharing family and community ritual are what build bonds and memories. Our students know they are part of the story of the Jewish听people听and they are thrilled to be writing their own chapter, a chapter that is grounded in the generations that came before them and will continue to be read in the generations to come.听
So yes, Friday was better than good. And I am so thankful to work in this place of meaningful joy.听
