Science Students Attend Global Health Course and Win Conference Quiz
By Mrs AnneÌýPoustieÌý
On the evening of Thursday 20 May, a group ofÌýCarmelÌýstudents attended the Global Health Short Course at Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research as an enrichment opportunity. They heard from a WHO Global Health Economist and learnt of his role in communicating with countries about the cost and profits involved in the implementation of a wide range of medical initiatives and the benefits of those to global economies.Ìý
Some students experienced hands-on the impact that working local can have on global health in creating birthing kits created by the ‘Birthing Kit Project’ designed to tackle infant and maternal mortality in global communities with limited access to medical support. The others were awed by a selection of medical innovations presented by Professor Pfleger, the Director of Biomedical Innovation at UWA.ÌýÌý
General Surgeon, Dr Foster (Head of General Surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital and Fremantle Hospital) shared her experiences with the Specialists Without BordersÌýorganisation. Her team visits hospitals throughout Africa and educates the next generation of doctors to provide them with the tools to save lives in their communities.Ìý
The students rounded out the night competing against the other invited schools in a conference quiz and winning first place!Ìý
Many thanks to the WA Medical Students Society who hosted this event and invited our students to attend.Ìý
