Spotlight on Jacob Muir (Dorot Carmel 2019)
Talented footballer Jacob Muir played for the Perth Glory Senior Academy team when still in Year 12. He's continued to go from strength to strength, playing football/soccer against academy teams in England and Europe whilst studying and fielding multiple American scholarship offers.听Jacob found time to chat to us about the road travelled since leaving Carmel.
Two years on, how does it feel to be in the real world and no longer involved with formal schooling?
Since leaving school, I have been training really hard at my football and have also started a university course in exercise and sports science. As much as I miss being at 国标麻豆视频APP and with my friends every day, I am enjoying the challenges and opportunities that are coming my way in the real world.
Could you recap for us what your involvement with professional sport entailed while you were still a student at Carmel?
Whilst I was in Year 12, I started to break through into the Perth Glory Senior Academy team. This meant my training hours and commitment levels increased. With both morning and afternoon training sessions, I was only arriving at School at 10 am four days a week. It was a challenge to balance school and training commitments but it was beneficial for me to learn how to time manage whilst having to catch up on all the schoolwork I had missed during the week to achieve my desired ATAR score.
I also had opportunities to travel overseas to Singapore, England and Spain to play against academy teams from all over the world, including Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Middlesbrough, to name a few. I was lucky to get these opportunities whilst I was still at school before COVID prevented any further travel.
You were offered a scholarship to attend university in the United States. Can you let us know a little more about that and what led you to stay here in Perth?
The United States had always interested me as a pathway for my football. I had started to look into different opportunities, sent my highlight videos to universities in the US and ended up receiving multiple scholarship offers from division 1 universities. It was a great opportunity for me to further my education and football, but, after having a long chat with my coach and family, we decided it was best for me to stay in Perth and continue playing for Perth Glory at this time. The biggest factor for me is that America will still be an option in the years to come, so that, along with other reasons, led to my decision to stay in Perth.
Please update us on your current soccer/sporting commitments.
I am currently doing pre-season training with the A-League team and playing for the senior NPL academy first team. I am still doing six training sessions during the week, with a game on the weekend. With one game to go, our team is currently sitting in fourth place and aiming for a spot in the top four cup.
Is there a particular memory you have of Carmel that makes you laugh when you think about it?
My experience of schooling at Carmel brought me many memories that I will cherish forever. One funny memory that will always stick in my mind is when my friends and I got into trouble for making a slightly inappropriate Tik Tok video. It doesn鈥檛 sound too funny when you think about it, but it鈥檚 something that I will look back on when I am older and think 鈥渨hat was going through my head?鈥 As teenagers, you won鈥檛 always necessarily make the best decisions, but I think it is so important to be able to have a laugh at yourself and learn from the mistakes you make.
Are there any hobbies or interests you have time to pursue outside of the sporting arena?
Yes, I have many interests outside of football. I have always been into many different sports such AFL, basketball and swimming, and will try to watch some live games when I get the chance. However, outside of the sporting arena, I love socialising and I really cherish the fact that I am still in contact with all my 国标麻豆视频APP friends. I am sure we will be close for many years to come.听听听听听
